if i did the dish style , would i need 2 of them one on my roof to send and one on his roof to recieve , or just one?
May I suggest industrial lengths of ethernet?

here is a Image of the direct route from his house to mine

mine is on the top right , his bottom left

as you can see , no big buildings or anything. just alot of tree's . I can put the dish on the top of the house , but it still wont be over the tree line .

Which house would the dish need to be on , his or mine?

You will need to have line of sight for this job (meaning his antenna needs to have a clear sight of yours). If there are trees in betwen, or buildings, fuggedaboutit..

im not going to say it's impossible, because it probably is possible but 1.7 miles is pushing it.

you can try but chances are you are unlikes to succeed and it will be costly. need to reroute the router antenna and insert a gain booster (one that meets FCC specs) with a high power antenna and focus it in his direction from high ground. something like this:
http://www.usbwifi.orconhosting.net.nz/wanbrow.jpg
http://www.usbwifi.orconhosting.net.nz/68.jpg

then he needs to set up the same dish contraption and point it toward your antenna dish. using USB dongle and long USB cable.

it worked a distance longer than a mile but if in your case it does work the latency is going to suck. also i see a lot of tall trees so very unlikely to work.

it'd be better for him to just get a broadband connection

2) The 8 PIN power connector on the MOBO is 2x 4pin power connectors combined in parallel to draw more power safely. 1x 4pin power plug will work, but you should think of an upgrade.
3) If you're running x64 OS and have more than 3GB ram installed but windows is only reporting around 3GB, Go into your bios and enable Memory remapping.

If you have a straight shot at his house, like you could see it, there's this one thing that people out in the hill country of texas do were it's kind of like one of those sound guns, but it's a think that you point, and it will pick up the connection from a long way away. I don't know what it is though.

Screw it, tell him to get his own broadband.
