I orderd a WRT300N wireless router and i have a spare 32bit pci wireless card.

My buddy is 1.66 miles from me straight shot. but is stuck on AOL dial up. and it sucks .

I was wondering if i put one of these on top his roof : http://sewelldirect.com/Super-Canten..._questions.asp he would be able to pick up my wireless signal?

or would i need something stronger like this :

if i did the dish style , would i need 2 of them one on my roof to send and one on his roof to recieve , or just one?

I read a guide about a guy ataching a homemade cantenna i think to a old primestar dish prob like the second one, and i think it worked for over 2 miles but i think its also a super pain in the a$# to adjust.

Is there a better chance of him picking up someone elses wireless maybe like a 50' usb cable with a usb wireless adapter at the end whaddya think??

The only way you would be able to use your own wifi at 1.7miles is if you learn WEP Cracking and hack somebody elses WEP Kep or just hop onto public wifi and SSL into your home network using Hamachi and Squid

The first option you posted is retarded and would not work to that range and the second one would get the antenna stolen off your car and possible your car as well ;p

dont listen to these guys its completely possible. i have built several antennas and mods using no more than a wireless usb dongle and a old wok. they work great. im not sure on the distance you are trying to cover. why not try it if he is willing to pay for the antenna.
