When you're applying the changes to the C:\ drive, are you telling it to do the subfolders and all of the rest of the files?

Something is funky with your file sharing services it seems ...

I'm on an XP Pro computer right now, but I think it's the same as vista in this respect... Try launching your services and see if the "server" service is running ... if so, stop and restart it ... and try sharing your folder again... I would think you're doing this as an adminstrator account?

umm first make sure your NTFS permissions are set right not just the Share permissions. Windows uses the most restrictive set of permission settings when figuring out if you should have access to a file when accessing a share. These are the permissions under the security tab.

security tabs of the folder? im pretty sure i did that.

remember i even tried doing this in safe mode, and the folder did not change to read only.

if the read-only check box is grayed out you should still be able to write to the folder. i just looked on my file server and every folder looks like yours with the grayed out check box and i have full control no problems. Thats the way it is on my at least you may have some other problem. Another thing is go under the security tab then click the advanced button then go to the effective permissions tab. check what your effective permissions are for the user you want to log on to the share as.

the check box is grayed out, but i have the ability to uncheck it. i do and press okay. go back there 3 seconds later and it's checked again.

i cannot write to the folder, as it keeps telling me that i do not have permission.

the permissions are set so that everyone has FULL control of the folder. i am trying to access the folder from another computer on my network. both firewalls have been turned off, and all other software is inactive.

Hmm... this might be a bug in vista basic that the MS tech you spoke to didn't know about. Have you tried installing service pack 1? I recommend a backup before installing.

How about using an administrative share to get access (ie C$). Admin shares are disabled in vista by default but you can enable them with the following registry edit.

Use regedit to add a DWORD (32bit) called "LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Policies\System

Set the DWORD value to 1 (hex).

Restart the machine and try browsing to it from pc2. ie \\192.168.1.100\c$

Additionally, also make sure you have the same user account and password elevated to admin on both machines.

Hope it helps...

Any success? If not, try this fix I uploaded. You can thank ericeod if this works for you. I was having a hek of a time with accessing and moving certain data on one of my partitions and he passed this along to me (months ago).

After you run the fix, right-click the file in question and use the "Take Ownership" option in the drop-down. This should give you complete administrative rights and full control of the files.
