First i just recently found this board and i am impressed with the knowledge of many of the posters here. After searching the forums for answers to my questions... well i just ended up confusing myself.
__________________all of this started because i keep getting errors when trying to connect pc as a media server to my ps3. people keep telling others to open ports on their routers and making sure there router is upnp enabled etc... so befor i get into the rest of my post... if your network is behind the router does the router still need to be configured to open ports between two devices on your network? i was under the impression, and maybe i am incorrect, that the only reason for opening ports on your router would be if the connection is meant to go out of the particular network, not for information staying within the network. back to my original problem i keep getting various DLNA errors and protocol errors and then everything just fails. apparently Ipsec being turned on automatically may be part of the problem, but i am reluctant to turn that off since im not really sure what it does. with windows firewall the problems with the connection are minimal but still apear though don't actually stop it from working. with bitdefender, my prefered firewall, well it fails and fails and fails. and yes i have tried turning off ics and stealth mode, as well as making sure that the firewall was apparently allowing windows to share the media, and putting my network and specifically my ps3 as trusted and yes windows sees my network as a private network but i may be configuring this wrong as i am not very familiar with configuring firewalls. of course depending on the answer to my first question, the problem very well may be a combination of the bitdefender firewall and my actual router. if someone knows how to make this work stabely please help

First, we need you to fill out your system specs in your User Control Panel "User CP". That could help a great bit. Is your PS3 using wired or wireless?

the ps3 is wireless as is my laptop pc. i originally thought it might be the fact that it was wireless untill i tried turning off the firewall and everything worked perfectly without any firewall (i disabled my internet connection befor i did that) but for the record the laptop is running a wireless N card that normally sits stable at 130mbs and when i turn on the ps3 the connection slows down to 78mbs. the connection appears to be solid. ill go fill out my system specs now as soon as i figure out how to heh. thank you for your time

On any of the software firewalls you have on your computer, open up the following ports:
Code:
80 (Inbound Internet) (Incase the PS3 needs it, if you mess with turning this on of off and you find it doesn't. Then disable it.) 21 (FTP, in case PS3) 22 (SSH, in case PS3 needs it) 139 (SMB port sharing? That is what google said) 445 (Windows file Sharing?) Those all may need to be used by the PS3 as far as I know. I don't actually own one. It may be helpful to give both the laptop and the PS3 static IP address too, but we can worry about that later for now. Just see if adding those to the firewall rules helps anything.

Nice work GHO...
FYI Mogitive. If you're going to run a software firewall you should be safe and sound disabling ipsec, this is really more a part of the windows firewall than anything else. If you can't figure out how to (or bitdefender won't let you) try using cygate. That's the firewall i use and it will allow you to setup port specific rules.

i have to go to work right now but i thank you both for your help and ill let you know how it goes. oh, and ive already set up static ip's on both my pc and my playstation. i was under the impression that ipsec was an encryption type? am i wrong? if im going to disable an encryption wouldnt it make more sense to disable the wireless encryption, since i already have my wireless secured by only allowing specific mac addresses access? or am i completely lost?

hey sorry i was gone so long. my girlfriened suprised me with a trip out of town for my birthday. so i havent had any chance to try anything yet, though i will say i had a great birthday heh. anyway, i just recieved an email from bitdefender telling me that there are indeed issues with their firewall and ps3 connectivity. they went on to inform me that the 2009 version will have that resolved and while it's release is still a month or two away i am free to download and try the release candidate and that i will be able to upgrade for free when the official release is sent out. so i may just try that. i will let you all know as soon as i know more.
