It's more than likely interference.
The 2.4Ghz range is quite crowded these days. With microwaves operating at 2.4Ghz. Cordless Phones around the 2.4Ghz range. Bluetooth as well.
Someone above mentioned cellphones. Not sure why, they don't operate on the 2.4Ghz frequency. Power output would have little to do with this, because if it's near, it's going to interfere.
There are some channels that don't overlap. Using a program like netstumbler you can find which channels are crowed, obviously WiFi only, and you can choose the lesser used none overlapping channel.
