I use AVG antivirus/antispyware most of the time and it does the job very well. It also includes an e-mail scanner which works smoothly with thunderbird/outlook.
AVG is great because of its extremely low resource usage and simple interface. There have some false positives before, but that's only because of *ahem* questionable *ahem* exe's on my computer.

Overall I would say that the best "protector" is you! Download responsibly, open e-mail carefully, and scan at least weekly and you should be golden!

My top 5 Anti-Everything's All Free: (Version number)
*Ad-Aware (2008)
*AVG Free (8.0)
*Comodo Firewall Pro Free (3.0)
*SpyBot S&D (1.5.2)
*And FireFox Web browser to prevent infections (3)

Never had a crash when using them all at the same time.

P.S. Just google to find them all, usually first link, too easy!

the best is to not get them at all. use firefox with the adblock plus plugin, along with the no-script plugin. you won't have anymore adware. for anti-virus, don't download weird things.

Some people like a failsafe. Like myself. I am a safe browser, but sometimes you don't know.

I use:
Avast
HiJack This
CCleaner
Spybot S&D
Numerous little utilities and Hiren's BootCD

I agree-- I use symantec endpoint protection regardless, but taking preventative measures is more intelligent than just to rely on simply an anti-virus program.
