Lol I have to be very careful about what I say. I work in a small portion of a security team for a very large company, and another part of the same team monitors everything users do on the web. If I give too much info I could get fired.

Anyways, we talked to the networking guys (Who are idiots, and wont let us see their logs) and they said they couldn't find the device. So because of the politics of the company, we are stuck using our own tools.

So to alleviate any concerns, I'm not some idiot admin . If I had access to everything in the environment I wouldn't even be here.

I'm passing all of this info to my team, thanx again for your help.

Is it Level3 or a sub-military company?

I would never believe security could be that high unless it was one of those places. I know they have offices in Colorado, for both companies.

Well, my concern was not that you were an idiot admin, it was that you might not be an admin at all. I certainly did not mean to come off as rude though so I apologize if it read that way.

I've been in positions like yours where you need to solve a problem but cannot be granted the resources to do so. So here are the only options I can think of...

1) Buy some directional antennas and walk around the building with them on a laptop running Netstumbler or something.

2) Use your built in wireless card to do the same thing (it will take much more time and will get very frustrating)

3) Speak to whomever assigned the issue to you and explain why you are unable to solve it without clearance for certain resources.

These are your only options to solve this in a short amount of time. If that is not a factor then you can brush up on wireless site survey techniques and use some more advanced tools and software to track it down.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

I'd look into getting Backtrack 3 (It's free Linux Distro, as a liveCD). Some very useful tools that you are looking for can be found on it. Kismet, NetStumbler and lots more other tools.. Although you'll have to figure out how to use it yourself .
