Hey all, I've got a rogue wireless access point somewhere around me, what's the easiest way to find it? I've tried a reverse ARP request with no luck.

Netsend*, and where the loudest/angriest yell comes from is likely where it'll be. Nah, I don't know the environment you're in or what, if it's a ROGUE ACCESS POINT< wouldn't it be easy enough to ask who has it? I'd like to assume you're in something like a dorm or whatever.. I can't really offer any helpful advice except to ask, if it bothers you that much

What do you mean rouge? Can you not see it?
You could very much run Net Tools 5 and search for it. Or use Linux BackTrace 3 to find it.

I can't give too much info (security people are probably reading this thread right now), but basically it's in an BIG office building, and we see an SSID that doesn't belong to us. We know it's not outside of the building. I'll look into the tools GHO suggested.

It has alot of different tools. Some that your Security/Business may not like.
![]() But it should not contain any viruses, I have used it before. If it is just a SSID that you don't know about, someone could have possibly just had their Laptop in AdHoc mode. Also, you could always use DD-WRT's software. Site Survey and Wivis Survey to be specific.

The best way is to use directional antennas and conduct a portion of a wireless site survey. If you want something a little more discreet you can use NetStumbler, Kismet, or some other piece of software that can show you signal strength. Then just set it up on a laptop or PDA and start walking around.
Tools like this can also tell you the type of AP and brand or model as well. This info can give you an idea about the possible range so that if you are in a 50-story office building you can narrow your search to say 5 floors. There are some more serious methods you can employ but if you are in an enterprise environment they need to be done by the network and system admins. |

I think he would be the sys-admin, if he was concerned about this. I don't really know what he means by "security guys" though.

That caught me as odd also. But I doubt any system admin would be unable to locate or disable a wireless threat...unless it was not connected at all to their network. |
