Default Slow transfer speeds networked PC's

I have a (Vista)and a laptop(Vista) networked via a Netgear WNR854T wireless router. I was wondering if there was anyway i could optimize my data transfer rates as at the moment they are only running at around 2 meg. I would have thought i could have got the data transfer a little quicker than this.

can anyone help please?

I was up until last week on 20MB/s, but have had to get rid because of a move of home. I used to rinse it up to around 24/5MB/s when i was using rapidshare. Not bad eh???

i think you were downloading @ ~10Mb (mega-bits) and not ~10MB (mega-bytes). what you were transferring between computers was ~2MB/s (x8=) is comparable to ~16Mb/s.

your wireless G (802.11g) connection is theoretically capable of 54Mb/s, which is in turn (/8=) 6.75MB/s..... getting this speed then depends on many other things, like walls, EMI, long distances, or other radio frequencies that operate on the 2.4GHz spectrum

I think Yawnbox is correct in his assessment plus if you add the overhead(encryption, interference, distance) to the 6.75 your now down to 3Mb to 2Mb's at best. The only way I can see you getting 20Mb's +(not MB's) is with wireless N, and that would only be for transferring of data on the network itself.
