Does anyone know if its is possible to run a remote desktop session while sharing an internet connection through the main machine? Do I need two lan connections?
My main machine is running vista and my server is running xp64, I have set up a local network connection, ran a cat6 cable between them (soon to be switch + machines)...After settings things up as far as initial network settings and such I was able to RDC to the machine just fine. However, Yesterday I tried to share the internet connection, which I accomplished, however in order for it to work, had to set the server to automatically get an IP from DHCP instead of being assigned the IP I originally assigned it, this kills the RDC for some reason, I have been trying to find an answer but I am stumped, I am sure there is someway to do it, but the answer as slipped by me, any ideas... I have an unrelated question to network speed as well, but I will save that for later I guess. Thanks in advance!

I don't understand why you had to do DHCP?
Could you explain that? I don't normally mess with Windows Server software. Just linux.

Well, initially when I just enabled my connection sharing, I still could not get internet on the server, so I did research, and I found a site which said for XP64 you have to use Obtain an IP address automatically...Originally I had the "host machine" as 192.168.0.1 and the server at 192.168.0.2 with the standard subnet mask and the host set as the default gateway...
According to microsoft, here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126 Quote:

I thought Microsoft used a 64.65 number or something around that ip range for that or something?

Run cmd.exe and type in "ipconfig /all"
What IP address is assigned to the computer that you want to use a static IP for?

Right now one is assigned (the one with the connection) is: 192.168.0.1
The one I am RDC'ing to is: 192.168.0.2 Edit, I disabled authentication on the RDC'd box and it seems to be working now. Thanks for the help, +rep.

So your network looks like this:
Code:
Modem -> PC1 -> PC2

Don't you need a crossover cable to network to computers directly together?
