So, I have a gigabit router (D-Link DIR-655), a gigabit integrated network card on my computer (GA-P35-DS3L) and another computer on the network, also with a gigabit adapter.

When I transfer files between the two, I get a speed of around 250 Mb/s, which is about 25% of its theoretical maximum speed. I'm trying to figure out what I can do to get greater speed.

One thing that comes to mind is that we're using CAT5 cables, do you guys think it'd make a difference if I had CAT6 everywhere?

Unless you install fiber, then that is the maximum speed you will most likely get.

Granted it depends on numerous thigns:

CPU
Cable Speed
Interference
Programs running in the background.

But you will never get actual gigabit speeds unless you use CAT6 (even then it won't be full, I don't believe) or install fiber.

I dont think you will get full gigabit speeds... until they come out with uber fast hard drives. you can only go about as fast as one hd's read and the other's write speeds.

i think your getting full speed, but gigabit is diffrent to gigabyte and 250 mbytes a second would equate to a gigabit, not gigabyte.

Here is the deal. This may not make sence, and it will be a lengthy (for me) post.

Gigabit is 1000
Each bit is 8 (an octet)

So you need to divide 1000 by 8 which = 125

So for the speed you are getting. It is pretty good.

You will always have bottlenecks that arn't related to network usage too.
