I have a computer running windows server 2k3 and I have an issue. I used to have the computer setup so that when I tried to access it's shared folders over my network by typing \\servername in the address bar of my computer the first thing i would get was a dialog box asking for a username and password. I would promptly type in the username and password of the administrator account on the server and it would grant me access. I would not be prompted again until I rebooted the computer I was accessing the server from. I recently added a new hard drive to the computer and moved a bunch of files around to make better use of the space. Now it no longer prompts and simply gives a you may not have rights to access this resourse contact your network administrator, access is denied. I just need some help getting it back the way it was.

I've actually had this same problem at work, and sadly i don't know the actual fix for you. What i may be able to offer is a workaround.
http://www.downloadjunction.com/prod...385/index.html Run As User.... I've ONLY!!! used this in an AD environment, not a workgroup environment, however it should, in theory, still work. Give it a go, and if you have any questions about setting it up i'll try my best to be helpful.

It has to be some simple setting change that I'm missing. I HAD it working just the way I wanted until I messed with it.

You CAN user netuse X: \\workgroupname\server name /user:username It will then prompt you for a password, but access would stay open until your rebooted the PC or lost network access. If you put that into a batch file and ran it from desktop it'd be very simple to use.

Ok well, this may help you out because I just figured out what was causing it in my situation. The guest user account was causing all of the issues. I'm not sure exactly why but when the guest account is enabled the computer won't prompt you for a user name and password when you try to initially access the network resource. Then when you actually try to access files it looks to see if your user name is in it's list of acceptable users and says "i don't think so" if you're not. Which I wasn't because it was connecting me as a guest and I didn't want to be a guest. So here is what I did, which was actually really simple. If you right click My Computer then go to manage to bring up the computer management window then click local users and groups you can view a list of users. Simply right click guest and click properties. Under the general tab you can click account is disabled. Then when you try to access this computer over the network it won't try to let you in as a guest, instead it will ask you for a user name and password straight up. I would assume you could create another user account in this same area and give it more limited access to your files rather than running through the administrator account like I wanted to. I KNEW it had to be something simple like that. I hope that helps you out too.

I guess that might be because the guest account isn't password, but no it doesn't help at work since the guest account isn't even in the burn we use (it's completely stripped out of the install).

Oh, thats kind of odd. You might check anyway because I tried the same thing on windows xp professional (it works here too by the way) and although the guest account is disabled through users under control panel it is still listed as active when you look under computer management.
