Neighborhood. I drove my brother to the roller rink, which was about 18 miles total, so I just let wifi lib run while I back and forth.

That is a good question. Once you do that, you have allowed a program or such to connect up/down with something outside of your network through your router. I'm not an expert on what that would entail, but if you have a firewall on your computer that would be the best. I don't think opening a port on your router would allow anyone access to your network, but maybe to your computer through the program. I'd suggest making a thread about that question as I'm sure there are others who are much more knowledgeable about that than me.

Excellent guide! +1

It's great to help people out with wireless security as it is basically non-existent. You birth-control analogy is great, none of the security precautions you have listed will do much good without the others in place. Even with all these prevention measures in place, WEP/WPA/WPA2 are not secure.

MAC filtering is useless on it's own. It takes 5 seconds to spoof a MAC address with the right apps and if anyone has ever played with aireplay-ng, they know how easy it is to inject de-authentication packets into a network to boot clients without being connected... Wait for a client to connect, de-authenticate them and steal their MAC and you have completely bypassed MAC-filtering.

WEP might as well be unsecured. WPA and WPA2 are marginally better but with the right tools (RTs, wordlists, etc) and a bit of time, they can be cracked fairly easily.

Again, this is knowledge that you average neighbor won't have so if you've got the discussed systems in place you should be relatively safe.
