You don't have to run Windows for anything BUT games. All you need to do is boot into it when ready to game. Do the rest of the stuff in Linux.

That defeats the purpose IMO. If you're going to use an opensource OS, then you need to use that opensource OS. Anything else will not make it opensource. Besides, I don't want to reboot every time i want to play a game. I use my computer for either gaming or web browsing/IM/music @ the same time.

That's just way too impractical for me.

step 4 is a stretch without a detailed description of how to secure a linux box, too. without one, there's no difference between using a linux box and a windows box. every operating system doesn't come as secure as the media portrays operating systems to be when comparing them to other operating system. yes, windows machines have a much greater surface to attack. it's also much easier to secure if you're knowledgeable about such things. comparing a linux machine to another linux machine, like Ubuntu to SELinux, you paint an entirely different picture. a windows machine not connected to the internet is "more secure" than a linux box connected to the internet, given the proper physical security.

given your comment about a "good firewall" i'm presuming you're talking about a home user. in the grand scheme of things, comparing a standard Linksys firewall to a modified distro such as DD-WRT, there's not much difference. and even then it's quite arguable. wasn't it two weeks ago that dd-wrt had that major flaw? i've never heard about such a thing in the default Linksys distro. you are to vague and so you're simply not correct. stepping back, we're only, barely talking about securing a single machine. this doesn't even mention the security of information once it get's transmitted. all operating systems are the same once you send data to servers that you don't own.

here's a good article about safe computing.

"-Note- Avira 9 now protects against all types of malware, not just viruses."
Ill let you in on a little secret. Very little do anti-viruses protect against even the simplest of new virii. Youd be surprised. Heuristics are a joke.

If youre going to tell people that Macs arent as secure as they think, atleast provide some more background. The platform is not as popular as Windows, so naturally, less stuff is written for it.
I recently made a post somewhat relevant to this, explaining how terrible the Mac OS's protections are against exploits and general overflow attacks. It _really_ is not as secure as one might think. In fact, its laughable.

Also, to comment on thiussats post. Thats a rather basic/vanilla setup. The firewall wouldnt be hard to get around. Theres tricks such as reverse connections, low ttl tricks, etc to pass these. The firewall its self really isnt going to stop much of anything. At that point, Id take a windows box over it. Windows has taken quite a stride in security, and you much less often see people getting shells on a windows box than you do on *nix/bsd etc.

A quick rundown of the minimum of what else Id put on that box is:
A grsec patched kernel
Iptables+snort/aide with strict rules
Whitelist all IPs
Cant forget strong passwords, and correctly set file permissions.
And more..

Last comment here, dont link to milw0rm. Thats the last thing we need is more idiots trolling those sites.

I mentioned that because version 8 and lower only supported anti-virus the 9 version is now supposed to detect malware rather than just viruses.

As for mil0, it was the first thing that came to mind for proof aside from the PWN2OWN competition.
