You don't have to run Windows for anything BUT games. All you need to do is boot into it when ready to game. Do the rest of the stuff in Linux.

given your comment about a "good firewall" i'm presuming you're talking about a home user. in the grand scheme of things, comparing a standard Linksys firewall to a modified distro such as DD-WRT, there's not much difference. and even then it's quite arguable. wasn't it two weeks ago that dd-wrt had that major flaw? i've never heard about such a thing in the default Linksys distro. you are to vague and so you're simply not correct. stepping back, we're only, barely talking about securing a single machine. this doesn't even mention the security of information once it get's transmitted. all operating systems are the same once you send data to servers that you don't own. here's a good article about safe computing.

"-Note- Avira 9 now protects against all types of malware, not just viruses."
Ill let you in on a little secret. Very little do anti-viruses protect against even the simplest of new virii. Youd be surprised. Heuristics are a joke. If youre going to tell people that Macs arent as secure as they think, atleast provide some more background. The platform is not as popular as Windows, so naturally, less stuff is written for it. I recently made a post somewhat relevant to this, explaining how terrible the Mac OS's protections are against exploits and general overflow attacks. It _really_ is not as secure as one might think. In fact, its laughable. Also, to comment on thiussats post. Thats a rather basic/vanilla setup. The firewall wouldnt be hard to get around. Theres tricks such as reverse connections, low ttl tricks, etc to pass these. The firewall its self really isnt going to stop much of anything. At that point, Id take a windows box over it. Windows has taken quite a stride in security, and you much less often see people getting shells on a windows box than you do on *nix/bsd etc. A quick rundown of the minimum of what else Id put on that box is: A grsec patched kernel Iptables+snort/aide with strict rules Whitelist all IPs Cant forget strong passwords, and correctly set file permissions. And more.. Last comment here, dont link to milw0rm. Thats the last thing we need is more idiots trolling those sites.
