Hi All,

I recently set-up a FTP server on my home computer with Serv-U. Installation went smoothly, except for the fact that I can't connect to it via Firefox or IE7. Both prompt for the username and password, but when I enter them it immediately displays 'Connection timed out'. Whenever I use WS FTP to connect to it, everything is great. Is there something I need to configure in order to get the web browsers to work?

are you using this for internal use only or is it set up for external access as well is port 20 open on your router / fire wall.

For external use, WS FTP works fine externally, I opened port 21 on my router, do I need to open 20 also?

ah i know what your problem is 100%

are you using your external IP address? when you are trying to gain acess to the ftp

make sure you use the internal ip address when trying to gain access to ur ftp on your network eg ftp://192.168.0.xx not ftp:// 68.248.4.2.xx

only use the external ip address when your in off site location. i remember this append to me a while back.

and port 21 is fine

I have a dynamic dns set-up also, forgot to mention, so I just type in the website that my router is sync'd to get to my site rather than enter my IP.

Try this combination:
ftp://usernameassword@192.168.x.xxx:21 that smiley not a smiley it is the symbol : then following after colon insert password.

In certain situations, a URL browser will not work when trying to access an FTP server.

IE, I set up TitanFTP on a PC on my LAN, and try to access it with Firefox, that won't work.

Try using winscp to access your FTP server.
