Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me with an unusual problem. I've recently built myself a computer. Here's a list of the components i used:- PSU - 800W Gigabyte Odin GT Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P CPU - Intel E8500 Core2Duo 3.16Ghz (overclocked to 3.99Ghz) CPU cooler - Zalman CNPS9900 Ram - 4GB Dominator DDR2 Wireless PCI card - Asus WL-138Gv2 54G GFX PCI2x16 card - 1GB BFG GTX280 Alright, so i have windows XP 64 installed and everything works perfectly. All the drivers are the latest available and general running of the computer is fine. The overclock has been checked with prime 95 and will run for 24 hours wth no errors on either core. (Please let me know if anymore information is required) The problem i have is when i play a game which is quite demanding of the graphics card, i get lost packets to my router. I noticed this when i first played WoW and i got unusually high 'latency' times in the game, this would range from 100ms to 2000ms. So i opened up the 'cmd' console and ran a "ping 192.168.0.1 -t" test to the router and about 2/5 packets returned as "timed out". I also play a game called Football manager live, the graphics are relatively poor. With the same ping test to my router, there were no packet losses. To test a game which doesn't use the internet, this should confirm that its the graphics card causing the loast packets. If i run Crysis, and leave the ping test running in the background, i again get lost packets. I've searched and seached on the internet for any leads as to what may be causing the problem and i just can't work it out. I have 2 different routers, a linksys and a netgear, both routers produce the same time out problem. I have tried with WPA and WEP and no encryption - it makes no difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really like the computer i have built, but this problem is really stopping me from fully enjoying my creation. Please can someone help, or give me a direction to start troubleshooting. |

That is a wierd problem could be your wireless card conflicting with video card somehow tho might try to get a differt wireless card to test.

Can you use a cabled card to test and see if it still happens? Just to make sure it is interference with the wireless.

Bal3Wolf, jacksknight thanks for your responses.
I can get hold of an ethernet card, i'll have to take it out of another computer - i'll get back to you with the results. As for testing another wireless card i would need to buy one. I'll see what happens with the ethernet card first. |

i thought it may be the something like that - i have changed the PCI slot of the wireless card to the one furthest away from the GFX card. But of the 2 slots available - both give me the lost packet problem.
Also the ethernet card i was after was from an old dell computer, and after testing it, there is no driver support for 64bit version of XP. Looks like i'll be heading down the local PC shop this afternoon. I'll let you know how i get on. Many thanks again for your help. |

Use your motherboards ethernet port...
Packet loss will be due to wireless.

Thanks for the advice.
I found 2 integrated ethernet ports on my motherboard. Both were hidden by little metal plate which i had to bend out of the way - i should have know that already (c: I connected the port up to the router and the lost packet problem has vanished - so its definitely the wireless card. Thing is, now i have a 10m wire trailing through my house. Now that i know its the wireless card, is there any way to fix this? Or is this a common flaw with wireless technology? Many thanks to everyone Dan |

You probably have large sources of interference if your loosing packets and you are within 30ft of cabled distance. Got wireless phones on 2.4GHz? Microwaves? Got neighbors? What are your walls/floors really made of? Do you have dipole antennas (probably - how are they oriented?)

This sounds like it could be a problem with the BUS (since all PCI slots run on the same bus). If you can get ur hands on one try using a USB dongle. This would help verify if the problem is with wifi itself, or with the PCI bus.
If the problem is with the bus it would likely be either the video card overclock (if it is overclocked), mobo drivers, wifi card drivers, or a bios setting.
