Default OSI 7 Layer model and TCP/IP model Homework Help

Im stuck on this, i dont understand how you can compare them?
The Question is this:
Quote:
Critically compare the OSI seven layer model and the TCP/IP model.

Write section 3 (entitled ‘Communication protocols’), which should include a description of the communication protocols in common use and explain why protocols are important.

Write a detailed comparison of the OSI seven layer model and the TCP/IP model, commenting on the approach taken and the suitability of each of the models.

wow. we learned about it in class.... but never had to do a report like that. So i guess research what each protocol is/does from both the OSI and the TCP/IP model and compare how one reacts/effects the other? Basicly telling how the OSI model works from layer 1-7 along with TCP/IP.

And to explain why protocols are important.... It's pretty easy. From my understanding, the protocols help data flow and interact with different parts of a network. Without even one protocol in the OSI, the model simply wouldn't work. Computer communication throughout the world would not be possible without the TCP/IP protocols and the OSI model!

I hope i was able to help even a lil bit. I am NET+ certified, but the OSI was never my greatest strength

EDIT: Wiki the OSI model and it will give you a quick overview of comparing the TCP/IP protocols.

I would start by looking over this artical,it will help you understand the protocols that run on the same layers in each & the differences. The OSI model has 7 layers while the TCP/IP model has 4 among other things.Hope this helps

I'm not doing your homework for you. If you haven't learned what works on what levels of the OSI model. Such as routers/switches/OS etcc, then I dont think you paid enough attention. I did this in my networking class about a year ago.

I would probably understand it if i did it in class, my teacher hasnt even said anything about either models but this is the question in one of my assignments.

thanks, reezin14 and opty165. I gave you both rep

The network layer in OSI corresponds to the Internet layer in TCP/IP. I know that is one of the differences..

Layer 7 protocols: pop3, smtp, telnet, ssh, ping, etc. etc. etc.
You need to pay more attention in class.

Cough wikipedia cough.

Now on another note, in my Cisco class my professor hasn't made us write a report for any of the TCP/IP or OSI layers.

You may want to read up on a lot, the TCP/IP and OSI model has a lot of information to write a report on. While this is a good thing, you can't get too caught up in the information and get sidetracked on your paper with that information. Pick three subjects after reading material on it and then go from there.

Know OSI like the back of your hand(layer 1-4 at a minimum) you will not get far at all in the networking world without them.
