will a cross over cable work when one pc is runnig vista and the other is runnng 7
Edit: vista is 32bit and 7 is 64bit if it matters

You dont need a crossover cable a standard cable will work.

it depends on the board, some can do without, some need it, i remember back when XP came out the current hardware needed crossover. most atleast.

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE. I heard Ford is coming out with heated bumpers in 2010 so your hands don not get cold while pushing it.

You're right. If its gigabit then it will work with standard cable.

ok quick edit. the pc running vista is a lappy, i thought about just taking the hard drive out and pluging it in to my rig but as i will be transfering often i thought it best to get the cable

If both the laptop and the other pc have gigabit nic then a standard ethernet cable works perfect.

You will need to assign static IP addresses to both computers while using the crossover cable, or you will not detect a network connection regardless.
__________________For instance, you will most likely want to use the 255.255.255.0 Subnet mask, and assign the IP's as 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2, respectively.
