K here is the scenario - first win7 keeps telling me i have "limited or no connectivity" which also means my lan is down + the internet (cant vnc into htpc)- which after using the nice win7 troubleshoot feature to reset local adapter 2 - fixes everything, this only seems to happen when there is a lot of traffic. SO after reading up on it a bit some people online have reported the same issues with their linksys routers, and they have stated to it overheating.
Router is a BEFSR41v3 so as im about to solder a nice 70mm fan to it - i connected my ethernet directly into my cable modem - and it has now had this problem twice more - which automatically leads me to believe it is the modem. cable modem is a motorola SB5101. bought this cable modem about 4 months ago - what ya'll think i should do? call cox? ive reset this dam thing numerous times.

Call 'em up.Maybe they have a frimware fix for it or if you can bring it to their offices and try explaining to them the problem in a really nice way , that this is causing you alot of problems.
That is , of course, it really is the modem.

From the looks of it you need to call Cox's with the mac address of your modem & tell them to upload the latest firmware. They may even have it on their website. Also look into upgrading your router firmware if possible. It's worth a try at anyrate.

They lied to you, the isp does the firmware... Thats how they set what speed you can download/upload. Comcast has a "unlimited" firmware where there is no caps, but if I were to put that firmware on my modem, I'd be some some deep doodoo...

Well at any rate, and I understand that doing the legwork does get annoying, give Moto a call.See if they can provide the firmware for you or at least point you in the correct direction.Heck they might even point you back to BB.But it least you'll be on your way to a more stable modem/router.

gonna call cox and ask them if its cool if i install the 50/5 firmware if they give me crap about not being able to do it - the more and more i look it up everyone keeps putting the responsibility on cox - in fact i should just hack the firmware and blame it on the customer representative "jason" whom told me its my responsibility.

If COX keeps placing this firmware upgrade on you, then maybe you can ask them to recomend the correct firmware that will work properly.
If they continue to give you a problem, i.e., we can't do that, or not our responsiblity, I would try to go down to their offices and speak with the on duty manager or supervisor.Explain what firmware you are installing in your modem and if this will cause any conflicts. If COX values you as a customer, and they should in this economy, they should at the VERY least give you an idea of what will work and what will not. Dude, sorry you gotta deal with this situation but, look at it this way, every time you get a "not our responsibility answer, from any of them, should make you MORE determined to have them help. You paid your money for a modem, even more money to get network access, and now no one will help when you issue is a rather simple one in the grand scheme of things. Hang in there....
