i have a NETCOMM NB7Plus4W and when ever i download a torrent the net will lag out ever if the torrent is downloading at 20kbs my guess is the router is trying to connect to so many different places it just dies. question is can turn off all the router gear in it and use it just as a modem? would this fix my problem and would it then be possible to plug a switch in to a 2nd network card on my computer and run my mates computers off that using my computer as a router

More than likely your uploads are saturated (unless you set them already). Case, mine. If I leave upload restrictions off, I get at most 300Kb/s (on a 1500Kb/s connection).
How to fix this: Take your maximum upload speed (www.speedtest.net) and multiply by 0.75 or 0.5 (.5 is safer, but isn't as fast if you're a good seeder). Set that value as your maximum upload speed in your torrent client. So for instance, our maximum upload is 32KB/s, so I set it as 16KB/s in uTorrent. Note, speedtest will report in Kb/s, so divide that by 8 to get KB/s Don't worry too much about max connections. I'm on 1.5Mb/s ADSL, and 200 connections is fine. As for the other routing stuff, if it is indeed the uploads saturated, then there is no need to do what you're suggesting. But short answer, no. You still need an actual network switch to do that (which in this case, is built into your router).

Try limiting the number of connections per torrent your client makes. I set mine to 60 connections per torrent and 100 global. Meaning that if one torrent is running it can make 60 connections, if two or three or however many are running then they can all only make up to 100 connections.
I find that this helped a lot on my crappy old router. Try limiting the number of connections your bittorrent client is allowed to make. As far as using Internet Connection Sharing, you could do that but you shouldn't, it sucks. I've had the exact same problem you're having and limiting connections as stated above took care of it. You probably don't have to limit your upload, I get the same speeds whether I set my upload at 25/Kbps or 200/Kbps, so I leave it at 200Kbps. Helps the whole swarm finish quicker. Seeding helps us all.

Yes, you have to enable "Bridging mode" though.
Here's the thing; unless you have an ethernet switch, and routing software, you're gonna be the only one able to use the internet. EDIT: try what Mygaffer said too. Limit the global connections. I find that with my setup, large numbers of connections is fine, but uploads kill it. It can depend on your router which one it prefers.

Maybe your ISP throttle's your download? Friend of mine needs to enable encryption or his ISP kicks him after downloading for like a min. So, try turning on (forced) encryption? Not sure if it'll help, but it can't hurt to try

Or you have Comcast internet service or a similar, unscrupulous company. They are one of the few that is known to intentionally bottleneck users who stream large amounts of data. They will also cancel your services if you continually exceed 250gb/month despite the contract agreement of "infinite bandwidth and data". There are 1000's of articles/videos on the internet about this. The Federal Communication Commission is working to stop this.

This question comes up alot in the bit-torrent world.. Check your torrent download managers online FAQ.
