I need to learn more about Active Directory for work. I already know some of the basics, but there are a lot of details that I need to learn. I need to learn more about forests, trust relationships, container usage, LDAP, and ADAM (now known as AD-LDS).
Can someone recommend a good book? I'm not shooting for a certification so don't need a test prep book. Just something that will help me be more effective at troubleshooting our product which uses AD authentication. Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the recommendation. Looks like it's a very thorough book that would be perfect for a network admin but might be a little over my head. I'm a software tester and just need to know some possible variations that our customers might have and ways to implement our product to use Windows authentication.
Edit: After browsing around Amazon for a little bit, this one looks good. Any thoughts on it?

That one looks good, I like how it's more of a scenario based book, those are always alot easier on the eyes then concept based. It's always hard finding well writen computer books.

I mentioned that book to one of our developers and he suggested that it might not be very good for me. He said that scenario based books aren't usually relevant unless your sitation is really close to the scenario described in the book.
He suggested this O'Reilly book instead. I think I might go that route...

At this stage of the game you'll only be using it as a refrence manual. They all go through setting up AD DC and most common implementations. To be honist, 90% of all the books are going to be irrelivent to your situation if you're not really intrested in administrating an AD structure..

If you have any knowledge of AD to begin with, I've always liked the AD white papers that are on MSDN and Technet.

Yeah, white papers are good....but sooooooo boring.
![]() I wound up ordering the O'Reilly book that I linked to previously. And I'm going to keep an eye on classes at the local community colleges too.
