I'm a total noob at this stuff, but I'm wondering if its possible to connect to my computer from behind a firewall by using a VPN, then through this connection connect to the internet through my internet back at home and if so, how would I go about doing this?

Remote Desktop If you want simplest solution, it will add exceptions in your firewall for you, and you will have the choice of encrytion type..

This might come in handy! Use SSH to create a secure encrypted tunnel between 2 computers, to bypassing firewall rules

Need more info on the application to suggest something that will fit your needs, but check out Hamachi as AMD+nVidia said.
