my problem is i have 2 computer downstairs now and only 1 cable running from the 3rd floor from the router down to the first with the 2 computers. it comes out of a jack in the wall from the 3rd floor. i was going to go wifi as the laptops i have with wifi run at full speed on the first floor on wifi. would wifi be ok for gaming?
__________________another ideas would be run another wire but verison did it the first time and i have no idea how to get wire down the wall 2 stories up. is there a way i can split it on the first floor? would a hub do this? i know the connection would be slower if both computers are being used but would it be slower if only 1 was being used would the other have full speed? could i connect another router to the wire coming out of the wall downstairs? there is the fios hardware in basement that runs up to the 3rd floor into the router. from the router it goes in to a jack in wall down to the first, there are 2 computers on the top floor on the router, the second floor is all wifi. i was thinking i could run the internet wire that comes from the basment and in to the 3rd floor in to the jack and out at the 1st floor and connect the router up down on the first floor but then i would have no way of getting wires to the third floor. any ideas? thanks

how does that work? sounds like a hub. connect into a outlet and then plug a cat5 from router into it.

it uses ur electrical to connect connection rather than wireless. all u have to do is connect 1 from a router then the 2nd to a computer. then u can connect a third and fourth and fifth etc. etc

so i would plug one in to my router. then plug one in to the power outlet near my computer and from that one to the computer itself?

I'd say go with a small hub or switch and get that 1 wire split into 4 outputs in your basement.
Now for the internet speed I wouldn't worry too much unless you have fiber. But your LAN speed needs will pretty much dictate the installation. Electrical system network solutions are a little quicker than wifi but performance can varry depending on the quality of your electical system.

Fishing wires between 3 floors is downright ludicrous in a finished home. More often than not, you are going to have to pop holes in the frames, but cross members between studs in the wall, too. I would honestly suggest the PowerLine adapters. It's completely safe and proven, and even easier to install.
__________________Think about it like this: there are broadband companies in say, the UK, that have used power lines to provide DSL service. Same concept, just not as much of an ordeal. All the set consists of is two adapters, one for each end of your network circuit, or in this case, a wall receptacle. Plug and play, and both sides will mate to a RJ45 connector to run small pieces of CAT5 to a PC, switch, router, or what have you.

if i put a switch on the wire coming from the router that will work right? would i have full speed connection? i can get one on new egg for like 20 bucks so i might just try it and see what happens. i am not worried about lan. i never use it.
__________________verizon was somehow able to get the wires from the basment to the 3rd floor and then another from the 3rd floor to the 1st. i have no idea how.
