I need some help designing a network for a project, i have the lay out already, i will be using hierarchy topology. In the project I am connecting seven school sites within a 40km radius. with a minimum number of 2800 hundred computers, (400 computers per site)
Connecting each site and buildings within each: Single Mode Fiber Optics (1000BASE-LX/LH) ITU G.652 will be used, so as to provide high bandwidth :MINIMUM OF 5GB OF BANDWIDTH within each site all the devices will be connected using Gigabit Ethernet (1000BaseT) CAT5 and CAT5e shielded and unshielded cable. MINIMUM OF 1GB OF BANDWIDTH I would like some recommendations on required Devices that i could implement in connecting this network Such as Network cards, Fiber Optic Media Converters, servers, etc. P.S.: I am not completely sure of the devices REQUIRED to setup a fiber optic network.

Step #1 verify your budget
Step #2 browse Cisco for hardware (optical) A little more info could help. And I highly recommend not using cat5 .. use atleast cat5e for performance.

ok thanks for the tips so far, any specific devices that you guys would recommend for each section i.e. Ethernet and fiber optics?

first off
to have each one of those devices (nodes) connected with gigabit ethernet speeds is a lot of bandwidth. second, for gigabit connections you need cat 6, cat 5/cat 5e doesn't work / work well with gigabit connections. go with cisco nexus 7000 or cisco nexus 5020 then you can connect via cisco ME6500. or you could get dell power switches network cable can be found here: http://www.monoprice.com/products/su...05&cp_id=10234 fiber stuff here: http://www.lanshack.com/Fiber-Optic-...ories-C14.aspx http://www.lanshack.com/Fiber-Optic-...ables-C12.aspx and if you need more help it can be found here: http://www.lanshack.com/fiber-optic-...l-network.aspx

(1) good value coolers: XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 or Black Knight |OCZ Vendetta 2. (2) 8 PIN power connector on MOBO = 2x 4 pin connectors in parallel to lower resistence/voltage drop. 1x 4 pin will work (3) x64 OS showing only 3.x GB enable memory remapping (4) Fridge cannot cool the heat output from a PC. (5) SLI/CF is not always better than a single card. (6) CTRL + F11 will start up the dell recovery console

Aren't all those Switches? Wouldn't be better to just run from switches to the devices? instead of switch to switch? as i did some searching on those devices and they all came up as switches. If i have a fiber optic connection to the net, would i need a modem or could i just use maybe a cisco 76000 router? If i need a modem what would you recommend?

I'm sure Cisco have experts in this kind of thing. Have you tried asking them what parts they recommend you get from a vendor? If you're worried about them ripping you off you could try getting a second opinion from 3Com.
