I am about to decommission my webserver in favor of:
1. An upgrade OR 2. Paying for hosting somewhere. Given that my needs are fairly modest (I just need to host a Wordpress site so need PHP and MySQL), if I choose to go to the external hosting, what should I be looking for in the way of cost, services, etc?

I found this site: http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/ Might help you compare ISPs.

So nobody has a laundry list of things I should look into when I read ads that say hosting for $x per month?

I'd recommend getting a VPS if you're experienced with setting up the services yourself. The performance is much higher, and you get more disk space, bandwidth, and you can choose how many databases you're allowed access to. This is probably overkill if you're only hosting a single blog, since a VPS can cover a large price range. The lowest VPS I've ever seen was $7 USD/m, but the specs were pretty low.
Mainly what you'll be looking for, for a blog, would be bandwidth, disk space, and the max number of databases. Location probably won't be too important, but hosting on the opposite side of the globe wouldn't be very good

Yeah. The primary purpose of this would be for fairly light hosting. The main reason I had a web server at my place was to have physical control over the server etc if ever there was a problem. That said, external hosting seems to be quite reliable and less troublesome as the admins there understand security and can probably do a better job of helping me secure my databases than I myself would.
![]() Edit: also it was to host personal files, but again, with photobucket etc being more useful, that use has kind of fallen by the way also.

Yea, I'd say any cheap hosting from a reputable host will be enough. Just take a look at the disk space your htdocs folder occupies, and estimate how many databases you'll need, and how much bandwidth you'll need.

Thanks.
I'll have to turn this over in my head for a bit and decide. I wish I knew someone who ran a hosting company, but alas I do not.
