Hey, I've got High Speed DSL from GIS. I am averaging about 126k download speed, but I want faster DSL. I'll download things that take days while my friends will have a copy in a few minutes. I've called the GIS Customer Service and they say there is no way to get a faster connection - They say I'm too far away from their server or something. I am paying for DSL that should get me about 1Meg while only getting a fraction of that. Is there any way to mod the modem to get faster speed?
I understand this is probably illegal, but I should have faster speed. Thnx.

No. The line speed is limited by the ISP and your distance from the exchange. Nothing you can do about it unless your ISP has a "speed boost" type function.

Is there anyway to get a "speed boost" function?

Not if the ISP doesn't offer it. I believe it has to enabled server side.
Also I running Fibre optic internet here and I don't get 1mb/sec. i wouldn't worry about it too much. If your on a 1500kbps plan, ~150k is all your going to get.

See to get those speeds here (in Australia) you can't live more than 2mi from the exchange. That could be your problem, your just a bit too far out.

You're getting EXACTLY what you should be. 1mbps = 125kb\s. (bits\bytes conversion, don't forget about it).

1. Don't ask for something here if you know it's illegal
__________________2. If you go to Speedtest.net what does it say for speed 3. How many computers do you have on this connection? 4. If you are too far away from them, it may be just that. The infrastructure simply does not reach far enough out to offer you more the 1 Megabit. Are you in a good cellular service area? If so, you may want to look into getting a Sprint mobile broadband card or something similar and a router to plug that into. 5. http://www.dslreports.com/psearch let's you search for ISPs by zipcode.

Heh, yeah. Even if it was legal, it wouldn't be possible due to distance and/or line conditions. There're probably only a few T1s feeding the DSLAM in the first place.
