Avast is great it picked up stuff that Norton and AVG missed, if you go with Avast make sure you not only un-install Norton but manualy remove all of the Norton folders in program files, shared files and the registry. Otherwise Avast will not install.

Another Vote for Avast, it is brilliant automatically updates without being a resource hog. It is so easy to use and I have never had a problem since using it with sygate firewall and ad-aware. Plus its free which means you donn't have to update subscription every year.

hmm if its not a resource hog i may get it...NIS 2006 takes up a hefty amount of temporary memory.

nod32, period

I generally let people pick their favorite piece of software because theres really no way to prove what is better than what, but nod32 has proven itself better than others for several years running

I use avast because i had norton antivirus and it expried but i've found this free software works better that norton. but i would also use ad-aware and spybot-search and destroy. i've found this combination works great.

I think the best security software is yourself. I use none myself, and have only been hit by 1 virus by my own mistake. If you know what your doing you shouldn't need the software in my opinion so I think you should add "Yourself" to the poll. I vote for that.
