Open a command prompt (start -> run -> "cmd"). Then type ipconfig /all and lets see what it says.

Is it DSL or dial-up? Your method of connecting to the net?
Also, if you re-installed Windows, and you know that nothing is installed correctly Quote:

well run > cmd> ipconfig
and.... NOTHING apart from a message saying ipconfig is not reconised as an internal command or External Command, operable program or batch file... now it is a DSL connection via USB BT VOYAGER 100 modem, recently the computer just restarted itself and i got windows has recovered from a serious error, when the install was started up again...

ok, if you're running win xp, then i'd say erase the whole partition, and try a different install disc. if you have a "legal" copy, just use the key from it, go download a copy of XP from somewhere else just to make sure that your copy isn't corrupted. i've had that happen before and it won't install any of the network drivers or anything.
