Thumbs up Old Newbie

I’m going along for the ride. I've been lurking now for a week and getting ready to build my latest creation. I’ve been around computers for quite some time now. I’ve been poking addresses since 1984 back when computers crawled around at less than 2 MHz (1.79 MHz) I once paid over $500 for a DSDD 5.25 floppy drive that maxed out at an incredible for the time 360k per floppy. For some reason I only remember 105k though. I’ve still got it and should set it up again and check out the historic games I still have. It’s been about 20 years since it’s been used. My first computer after the Atari 400 was a IBM 286 12Mhz it came with the IBM OS installed OS2 I didn’t leave that for long and installed Windows 3.1, Back then everybody knew the DOS instruction set. Not sure if I ever had a 386, I don’t remember. I did have a 486DX 75Mhz though. My first build was a PIII 450 MHz CPU (over $500 back then just for the cpu) then a PIII 950 then looked on the other side of the mountain and built an AMD 1800+. While it was nice for a time I went back home and built another Intel about four years ago, a P4 3.06 Northwood (P4B533) which has been serving me well. But we all know there’s a time they all underachieve. Hence my attraction to this site. Of all my computers over time I’ve never dabbled in OCing before. My latest build will feature a Q6600 B3. Unfortunately I didn't find out about the G0 stepping upgrade until after I took delivery of the B3 (SL9UM). I'd like to return it but I've already opened the package and installed it. I haven't put power to it yet though. Anyway I'm sure it'll please me in any event. I'm not looking to break any records in speed. I'd like to push it to about 3.2 GHz though with a minimum of 3.0. First I'll log all the stats in stock form then advance slowly. My rig should show up in my signature so you can check it out and maybe let me know what to expect. I’ve seen several builds in this forum using the same CPU and mobo. So hopefully I can advance in a realm of security. It appears to be a very pleasant site with very good help available. So I look forward to meeting some of you guys.
Clare

Why do you have a Q6600, 2gb of XMS2 and some other nice stuff but a 7300GT? That card is like death to your system. I justs makes no sense . Unless you dont game.

Very good question. First off I've never had a Video card in this form factor so while I decide what I need/want I just filled the slot with something to get me up and running. I'll need to weigh all my options prior to laying out the cash for something I don't need. First off I don't game so I don't see a need for a 8800GTX or whatever is the latest greatest video card. I mainly Host a mess of files (Movies, TV Serials, Comics, MP3 files) and do a lot of Video crunching. I was advised to go into a quad due to my extreme multi-tasking I do. But I'll leave the final decision for a different Video card for later. This'll do for now. Very good question though, because I know it doesn't fit in this system. Time will tell.

Good advice, exactly the area I was thinking about. I'll address it as the need arises. Just concerned now with getting up and stabe where I want to be then I'll move in that direction.

Thanks!
