Those patches have nothing to do with the gpu. It makes contact with the ram and mosfets.

I get what your saying, but there is a thermal pad on the GPU, I wouldn't mess with that.

When I took apart my GTS, I only saw thermal paste on the gpu. The white pads are on the ram and mosfets.

It's sort of a paste and/or pad, it is thicker than what normally should be on their though. Therefore putting on the normal amount may not make contact with the heatsink, see what I'm saying?

But when most people reseat, they change the thermal paste for a reason

interesting as when my GX2 Arrives (Thursday ) i might want to apply some shin etsu if stock cooling doesnt work as well as it should.

So far I'd say the 9800GX2 runs about as hot as a stock cooled 8800GTX which isn't really that bad. Mine runs about 52C idle and 72C at load with the fan speed cranked up passed 90%.
