Default AS5 or thermal pads?

Hey everyone, in my laptop there is a thermal pad over the GPU (in between the HSF and the GPU), should I replace it by a thin layer of AS5?

It depends. I took apart my laptop once and found my setup for the chip was weird. It had the chip, a shim, then the cooler. Very little thermal material between them. I took it off, cleaned off what I could, and put AS5 between the cpu/shim/cooler. My point here is that the cpu cooler was not in direct contact with the chip. Your gpu might be the same way. If they used a pad, it might be making up for some space between the cooler and the gpu itself.

I would say try putting AS5 on there, as it will transfer heat better than a pad will. However, check to make sure the gpu cooler makes good contact. If it leaves a gap, it wont transfer any heat at all, and your gpu could risk getting damaged.

/agree with the top poster...

Except you should make sure that there are some sort of mounts for the HSF. If its stuck on using the pad as an adhesive as well, then it will be dangerous to put AS5 in there as it may slip off and short circuit your laptop.

Default Nail right on the head.

I couldn't have said it better myself orion ..

Rep it up gentlemen.

The only point of thermal paste is to transfer heat from the cpu/gpu to heatsink /heatspreader. Not to mention fill the void spots where contact isn't made due to manufacturing defects " machining marks ". Which is where lapping comes in.

I'd use arctic ceramique for gpus and mosfets. as5 is for cpus. Capacitance issue.

Yea, it might not be the best idea to put it the gpu.

Not Electrically Conductive:
Arctic Silver 5 was formulated to conduct heat, not electricity.
(While much safer than electrically conductive silver and copper greases, Arctic Silver 5 should be kept away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. While it is not electrically conductive, the compound is very slightly capacitive and could potentially cause problems if it bridges two close-proximity electrical paths.)

Ceramique would be the best choice.

Or you could just go all the way and get some MX-2, which is completely non-conductive.

All those extra frames do is create screen tearing. 4) FireGL and Quadro GPUs are for workstations running AutoCAD and that's why they cost so much. 5) Empty RAM is a bad thing. You want your programs and games utilizing everything they can.
