they say witha really good heatsink a video card can get to 50c and that consider low?
i keep hearing people saying their video card is at 60-90c sometimes... whats going on? its natural to have really high temps? refering to the 8800 and 9xxx series.

Yes, 8800-9800's will run really hot without fan profile tweaking, its normal to see some of these cards at 80º-90º from what ive read. I personally dont think its good for them, 80 for an NVidia card is really HOT to me......

50 is good. I dont go above 46-48, but anything under 60 would be optomal, and under 70 would be fine. Above 70 is when I would start to get worried.
__________________I dont think "modding" the current heatsink will be possible. You can take it off, and get an aftermarket heatsink, but I have the same card, and the cooler is quite unmoddable. Taking it off is quite easy and wont void your warranty though, just some screws off the back of the card. If you do take it off, make sure you clean off the old TIM and apply new before reseating it.

Pretty much anything below 70 on the newest cards is fine, 50-60 is normal with about 50% fan speed.
If its an older nvidia card, like the old 8800GTS or the Rev 1 8800GT they will get up towards 80 deg load.

meh, my 8600GT gets about 57C idle and 70C-80C under load. I only start getting worried when it gets about 120C cause thats when they are supposed to blow...

With your case, you should be able to use rivatuner to set the fan speed to keep it well within decent temps.
