Default Aftermarket Cooler Issue with BFG 8800GT

I had bought a DuOrb GPU cooler from Fry's a little while back and I cant get it to work for the life of me. I've installed everything properly and the system will boot and temperatures on the graphics card are significantly lower, but when the card's temp goes over 70 degrees C the card just shuts its self down and im left with a black screen. The cards stock load temps ocasionally exceed 90 degrees C, and with the stock cooler installed again, it works flawlessly - at high temps. I have a feeling it has something to do with the 4 pin power connector, since the gfx card no longer has control over the fan it shuts itself down thinking the fan is dead. Anyone having a similiar problem? Any solutions? This is my first time working on graphics cards so i could be making some stupid mistakes...

I'm willing to bet you used the wrong sized screws when you mounted the DuOrb onto the GPU. The DuOrb comes with two sets of mounting screws. It's likely you used the longer of the two sets, and therefore the base of the cooler is not contacting the GPU at all.

Remove the video card and visually inspect the contact between the cooler's base and the GPU. Hopefully it's as simple as this.

The DuOrb works SUPERBLY on G92s, for sure.

Good luck, and hope this helps!

No, I looked at that. The manual had all the mounts wrong and actually didnt come with directions specifically for the GT, I did a trial and error using all 8 holes and both sets of screw. The small ones did sit a bit off the PCB but the long ones kept it a good 1/8" off the chip, so i went with the small ones and applied force to the heatsink, then screwed in the back slowly, trying not to warp the PCB too much... As i said before, the core temps dropped stock idle 62, new idle 52, so a good 10 degrees was taken off...

Kvatch, my apologies. I misread your original post.

Perhaps you used too much TIM?

Weird.

I just got them and it had the 8800GT compatible sticker on it. I used the smaller screws and put the DuOrb on as tight as I could. My temps right now are 38c and 42c.

Maybe.

I put a thin layer of AS5 all over the GPU then put on the cooler.

possibly. I could try scraping some off. The stock HSF was covered in the stuff and it was pretty nasty to get all of it off. Might not have cleaned well enough or had applied too much of my own. Im still curious though why my graphics card is shutting itself down at a temperature normally exceeded with the stock fan...just took me off guard that it would act like that, but if scraping some off would prevent it from reaching 70 degrees ever, that could be viable solution, ill go ahead and try it before i go to bed tonight.

Clean off the GPU completely so it looks like this.

Then apply the TIM like this. Keep it think and use a credit card to remove any excess TIM and to keep it even.

Yeah, there we go, I decided to look up a proper thermal paste application article on and realized I had put at least double the amount I needed, and probably should have cleaned better. Scrubbed the thing until it had a mirror finish(like shown in your picture) and put all the heatsinks on with the exception of two that refuse to stick for more than 30 seconds. Guess I just wont go crazy overclocking the RAM... Idle temp is down to 43 and load never went above 59 while playing crysis for a good 30 minutes. Still weirding me out with the previous total shut downs, but it works and im happy. Sorry to be such a bother since the solution was so simple. I guess this means I finally can overclock the thing without the temp going >90; which it had done about 2 days after I bought it.
