How accurate is the RivaTuner Temp Monitor?

I just reinstalled xp and decided to play some CoD4. I turned on the OSD for RivaTuner so I could monitor my temps. I was suprised because very quickly it went from like 50C idle to 70C, which is supposedly the max it can take... I have the stock cooler, I lowered the clocks from 600-1000 stock to 510-950, and tried lowering the CoD4 settings from x4 AA to none. Should I be worried? Am I killing my chip? Btw, it is pretty hot today, around 80F?

It's usually pretty accurate. A big jump like that isn't that rare, but it should level out there around 70. Also the 8800gt is generally good up to around 100. The 70 degrees is the rule for most processors.

70C is perfectly acceptable for an 8800GT.
My x1950XTX went up to 110C yesterday. This Xigmatek GPU heatsink just doesn't have the brute strength to handle what the 19xx series can pump out, heat wise.

Most GPU's can handle 100C plus (Celsius, not Fahrenheit).
You would think that they would ship the cards at a level where they would perform fine under the heat loads they put out. If it was really too hot for them, they wouldn't sell them with such bad coolers or at such high clocks.

Some old CPUs used to be able to take like 80-90C.

I think the temp monitor seems to be pretty right on, im not sure if my card can really get as hot as fast as it claims, but I can tell its right when it gets to the high ranges (70c-80c+) and my gpu gets grumpy.
I don't even own anything to really push my card yet (Send me Crysis PLEASE!), though Assassin's Creed to bring the temps much higher then anything else.
