Because the G0 8800 GTX used an integrated heatsink over the GPU that none of the other chipsets seemed to have. The stock cooler on it was actually pretty damn good - but a few of us tossed them for upgrades only to realize that getting the stock cooler back on is pretty rough.

Frozencpu.com might have some HR-03s have you checked?

I used to have the Zalman VF1000 and they are good, give good decreases in temperatures.
However what I've discovered is that aftermarket graphics coolers are often not worth it. For the price of that Zalman, you could be halfway to a GTX260 (it's true, if you factor in the ram-sinks and the thermal paste and shipping....)

I say the original cooler on it is good to go, no need to waste time/money/and risk on a new fan. If your temperatures are raising higher than you'd like I'd look at your tower and your air movement/pressure inside the case. I own a OC8800gts320 and it's smooth as butter on the original fan. I would however modify the end of the heatsink where the fan dumps hot air back into the case so that the air will move continuously out of the back.

not HR-03 Plus. For the 8800GTX the only ThermalRight offering compatible with the huge IHS on it is the HR-03 "Plus" (not the GT or REV.A models)... unfortunately, after getting a "real person" from ThermalRight via email I found out that their warehouse is empty and they're out of production.
__________________Gah! There's that Accellero gadget to try, but it doesn't look the same. The stock cooler requires me to find a replacement for that thermal-mash-compound they used over all the ram... but I have to admit, exvacuating the heat out the rear of the case was a great stock feature and I use it on my 8800 GTX that runs inside my HTPC to help keep it cooler/quieter.... but I want this one for RAW POWER (laughs)
