Default HR-03 GT Compatibility?

Okay, I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but I have a problem.

I am currently running 2 x XFX 8800GT's XXX in SLi and a PCI Soundcard.

Due to how close the PCIx16 slots are on the eVGA 750i FTW, the "upper" card gets very little airflow. Even with Thermaltake DuOrbs, card one gets much hotter than card two (in the lower slot).

Off Topic: The DuOrbs are really noisy, even for a benching rig.

Anyways,I was wondering if the Thermalright HR-03 GT will fit. I know it will fit card two, and have the added benefit of being passive (see case).

Will the HR-03 GT fit card one "wrapped around"? Will it hit the northbridge cooler?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I believe you're fine. To be honest, it doesn't go down too low on the mobo end, but it sticks way out on the ohter side. It should fit two in SLI too, but it'll be tight.

Another, cheaper, solution is to get an Antec spot cool. This will not reduce any noise though. Just get some sort of fan controller for the duorbs.

I wouldn't recommend it. If you're hell-bent on getting one though, I can sell you mine for a fair price. I used it for a month or so, then I just took it off and put it back in the box.

I use the T-Rad2, and I swear by it. If you haven't purchased a cooler yet, you have to check this thing out. It's super slim and cools very well with a couple of 92mm fans on it.

If you're ambitious like me and all about slimline, you can get a couple of Scythe 100mmx12mm fans, drill and tap two more holes in the T-Rad fan mount, and put those on there. You have the benefit of more fan surface area as well as slimmer fans. SLI is a breeze (pun intended) with that setup.

I have already looked into the T-Rad2. It would be an increadibly close call with the second PCI slot. If I install a fan, it could be a couple of mms.

@hiiyah777: How close is yours to the second PCI Slot? (the first will be blocked by any cooler) What CFM fan are you using, and what temps are you getting?

Pics would be helpful.

Thanks everyone so far!

It's not that great passive, it's about the same as the stock cooler, except silent.

Here's a picture of mine, with a fan, and you can see how big it is.
You may be able to flip it up depending on your cpu cooler and mobo. but the fan adds a lot of space

Here's a pic before the fan mod

EDIT: Sorry, I just checked my photobucket and my computer, but apparently I still haven't downloaded the pics from my camera's memory card yet. I'll get them soon, look for my worklog.

Okay, I am looking to buy the coolers in the next couple of days, and it seems that you have the answers.

@hiiyah777 What temps are you getting with the T-Rad2s?

Which of the two 100 x 12mm Scythe fans do you use (low speed or high speed)?

Do you have those pictures?

Won't the 100 x 12mm fans fit the cooler stock? They have holes for 92mm fan holders.

If they won't, how did you do the mod?

Sorry that I am asking so many questions, it is just that I don't want to spend $100+ on bad/incompatible coolers.

Thank you so much!

1. What temps are you getting with the T-Rad2s?

If I recall correctly, I want to say something like low to mid 30's idle and something like a max of 55 on load. It's been a while since I've had it hooked up, but I need to hook it up and let you know. I'm currently in the process of assembling my good system, so I'm running my backup rig. My new 8800GT finally came in, so all I need to do is mount the T-Rad onto it. Then I'll hook both of them into my backup rig (see sig) just to test them out in SLI.

2. Which of the two 100 x 12mm Scythe fans do you use (low speed or high speed)?

I always choose high speed fans, just so I can have the extra power if I need it. I use a Sunbeam Rheobus Extreme fan controller, so i can always turn them down if needed for silence.

3. Do you have those pictures?

I know I have them on my camera, I just need to download them to my computer and upload them to photobucket. I'm a procrastinator, so give me a little time. I'll do it eventually, I promise. Keep an eye out for my work log.

4. Won't the 100 x 12mm fans fit the cooler stock? They have holes for 92mm fan holders.

Those were my exact thoughts when I purchased the first two fans. Unfortunately, because they are actually 100mm fans, it won't fit the two of them close enough together to utilize the existing mounting holes.

5. If they won't, how did you do the mod?

I'll go into more details and everything with my work log, but I basically had two options: Bench grind the crap out of both fans in order to squeeze both of them onto the cooler, or drill a couple of new mounting holes.

I didn't have a bench grinder, so I went with the latter. I drilled two holes and tapped them, then I had to drill to holes on the fan itself to mount in the other two holes. Sorry if that sounds confusing, but I promise it'll make a whole lot more sense with pics and everything. I hope to start the log this weekend.

6. Sorry that I am asking so many questions, it is just that I don't want to spend $100+ on bad/incompatible coolers.

Trust me, I know exactly how you feel. But once you see this thing fitted with the two 100mmx12mm thin fans, you'll agree that it is by far the best cooling solution for this card.

I just mounted the other T-Rad and took some pics. I'll be right back with those.
