Default 9800gx2 cooler mods?

since my gx2 is being RMA'd, i figure i would try to see what sort of things i can do to the cooler to help it do better
and don't say add moar case fans! i've already added fans to key spots
so, i hear you can take off the cover to the heatsink, anyone have any experience with the improvements this could make?
and, how difficult would it be for me to remove the actual cooler and reseat it with say, as5? or oczfreeze? and what about the tape gunk that they use for the ram to interface to the heatsink?

i just want to make sure this puppy will run cool
its an xfx btw.

dont use the tape that stuff is usually junk... use the AS5 if your going to do it that way... i was suggest water cooling.. you can get cheap kits that work pretty well... and yes they do have special blocks for the GX2... =D hope that give you an idea or two...

thanks for that, but i just want to see what i can do to the stock cooler
i'm poor lol

i've heard of mods for like the old g80 reference cooler, where people take off the cover/fan and put their own on it for some stellar temps

i know that wouldnt be the case here, but i think just taking the casing off of it might help

Take the shroud off and clean the GPU's with alcohol and do the same with the memory chips and the PCI-E chips and reapply thermal paste to the GPU's. Keep the shroud off and mod yourself some new fans to stay on the PCB and blast everything

what are your temps? to be quite honest, i dont think its worth the time to cool it any better than stock cooling. I thought about doing a cooling mod myself but felt that in the end the stock cooling was enough.

my card is oc'ed to 740/1150 and the max temp this thing runs to is 80 degrees celsuis with 100% duty cycle on the fan.

anyhow if youre that bored, heck go for it

You just need too adjust your fans for a good airflow

I overclocked mine too 742 core and put the fan speed 100%

39 idle 56 degrees max under load

thx for this input fellas much appreciated
anywho, when i had this xfx before, it loaded awfully high, with 100% fan speed
(i forget actuall temps, but 70+)
hot enough to where i wouldnt want to OC it at all
i've heard rumor of people just taking the cover off tho, and i hear that helps alot due to the fan design, and how alot of air could freely flow out by the pci bracket instead of hitting that wall and then going out the side...
well, off to the store, i'll be back in a bit, moar input will be much appreciated!

if it was hitting 100 degrees i would start worrrying but as WEEBEAST said, just work on your case flow and you'll be set. Move any excess cables away from the direction of air flow and you'll be fine.

70 degrees plus on load with a game liek crysis is fine IMHO.

it was when stressing with atitool artifact scannar
thats too high for stock IMO!
and my case airflow is great
cables are all out of the way, got a fan blowing out RIGHT at the vent of the gx2.
it stays decently cool, i just want it cooler.
and i've heard tales of removing the shroud/cover for some better temps
anyone have any experience with anything when it comes to doing anything to these coolers to make them run cooler?
