Default How essential are ram sinks/voltage sinks?

So I got my Accelero Twin Turbo today... what a pain in the ass!

The ram sinks all went on ok, but when I was trying to install the main heatsink, with its ridiculously tiny screws (hint: I had to use a flat head from my glasses repair kit ), one of the heat pipes started pressing against one of the ram sinks and the little bugger fell off!

Through some intense manual dexterity I managed to get it back on, and after about 30 mins of tinkering I finally got the heatsink on tight enough (could be tighter though)

So right now I'm thinking, ok great! Now I can install it!

Well it turns out that when I was installing the "voltage regulator heat sinks" I put the last one on too close to the edge of the card, and when I tried to install it, it pushed up against my SB heatsink and dislodged ALL 4 OF THE ****ING THINGS!

So again, another 20 minutes of intense manual dexterity I managed to re attach all 4 of them without removing the cooler itself, this time slightly overlapping so it all fits.

I finally got it all booted up, and although I haven't tried to stress it yet I'm running a full 20C cooler at idle!!!

I'm a bit worried though, what would happen if either a ram sink or one of the voltage regulators falls off?

Well it seems I just answered my own question.. one of the ram sinks fell off while I was running ATI Tool -> Instant hard lock.

Anybody have a better way of attaching the sinks? I swear 3m wouldn't use this adhesive crap on their post-it notes...

The RAM sinks and voltage reg heatsinks are quite important, specially VRM HS', those can heat up to ludicrous temps if not properly cooled, specially when the card is OCed.

If the RAMs overheat, the most that can happen is a lockup, if the VRMs overheat they will most likely burn down.

EDIT: Zalman has a thermal adhesive, its composed of two small syringes when applied together they work like a thermal glue, quite strong from what I've heard.

The problem isnt the adhesive, its the crappy residue left by the thermal tape. read my post here how i did it.

And once you've cleaned the surfaces well with alcohol, if you need some 3M 8805 thermal tape PM me your address. I'll send you enough to do the job for free.

I cleaned it with 99% isopropyl alcohol until I could read the writing on the things!

Would this work?

Edit: Wait, think I could pick up that 3m thermal tape locally?

You probably wont find it locally. Did you read my post though? Cleaning with alcohol wont be enough to get that residue off. You are going to have to do something more to get them clean enough to stick.

The instructions say to use an eraser

I read your post, and apparently you can get the 3m stuff at home depot, so I'll probably pick up some sandpaper there as well

I think a lot of this has to do with stress though, I didn't think it would affect anything, but coming home at 11pm after basically going 8am to 10:30pm non stop school and work and spending 2 hours trying to install a heatsink isn't the best idea in the world...

I'm doing the same thing again tomorrow (ugh!) so I think I'll try this again on Thursday. At least I got to see it working a bit before catastrophic failure...
