when i put them on my 8800gts I just used a small dab of IC7 on each individual chip. seemed to work well for me.

I use Iandh's sinks myself, first on my 8800GT SC and now my 8800GTS 512.
__________________I have only ever used AS5 (no pads). No issues so far (15 months) Vram is usually 8c less than the core.
