Default 8800GT Fan Speeds?

is there a downside to having the GPU fans goin at 100% all the time besides the noise? cause they came set at like 35 percent in the little nvidia control panel, or is it smarter than that and changes as necessary automatically? i set it to 90 and noticed a significant difference

Honestly - i've always used RivaTuner and set fan profiles from there. Then I can right click on the taskbar icon and change fan speeds easily.

I don't think the fan is has a variable temp control - once it hits a certain temperature it'll probably jump up to high speed.

What he said. Keeps the card nice and cool. I do a 40/60/80 on fan speeds.

Rivatuner or EVGA Precision is great to OC and control fan speed.

The card is not smart enough to sense when it needs extra cooling and the stock cooler is useless. Knowing how hot these things get, Im really suprised they let em out with 35% fan speed.

Options:

If you technically inclined, you can set up Ravatuner to speed up when the temps start to rise.

If your not, set and save at 100%

Get an aftermarket cooler.

To answer your question though, the only downsides are
1) Noise
2) decreasing the life expectancy of the stock fan.

My old 8800GT changed the fan speed from 35 to about 60% when it got hot to around 80c. I don't know what you're talking about.

Perhaps when you got your 8800 is was newer than mine. Perhaps the cards have matured since mine was made.

For what ever reason, my fan would not budge off 35% no matter how high the temp. The only way I could get it to respond was with Ravatuner.

The fan will probably die in like 9 years instead of 10 years. Nothing to worry about at running the fan at 100%. Except for one company, BFG I think, had stickers on their fans and when it went to max speed the sticker came off and jammed the fan.

I got this 8800GT a few weeks after it came out. The original behavior for 8800GT fans was to stay at 30-35% until it reached 90C and then ramp up to 100%, but EVGA put out a BIOS to fix that. I think a few other brands have done that too.
