i have the same card (MSI 9600GT 512MB OC) but with the double slot cooler... keeps my temps @ load 60 C overclocked. So clearly there is something wrong with your cooler.
so you ripped the heatsink off and put it back on... did you make absolutely sure that the heatsink was contacting the GPU correctly? are the pushpins/backplate fully seated and in position? not reapplying thermal paste wouldn't have THAT epic of an effect (unless you wiped it off and didn't apply any). the stigma with that is the microscopic particles get in the paste and adversely effect temps... but it wouldn't be that bad. so my advice would be to take off the cooler (again), clean off the stock crap and apply some AS5, making sure there is contact between the heatsink and the GPU.

I'm folding right now and my temps are 54C max, but keep in mind this card is barely a week old and has not been OCd other than the shaders which have been factory OCd. Reseat the heatsink with good paste and blow any dust out and the card should be good as new or even better .

did you clean it out realy good? and how is your case airflow... i had an issue with a heat pocket under my gpu once i have a pci slot fan there now to blow out the hot air that gets traped under the massive cards they make now EDIT when you do get the new paste don't over apply just a dab will do and ac5 takes up to 200 hours to mold to the heatsink all the way so you will notice a change over the first week you apply it on a gpu usualy 5-10c

Couldn't find many pics on this card but this is basically the V2 version which seems to lack the plastic cover on the heatsink.
