i have the same card (MSI 9600GT 512MB OC) but with the double slot cooler... keeps my temps @ load 60 C overclocked. So clearly there is something wrong with your cooler.

so you ripped the heatsink off and put it back on... did you make absolutely sure that the heatsink was contacting the GPU correctly? are the pushpins/backplate fully seated and in position?

not reapplying thermal paste wouldn't have THAT epic of an effect (unless you wiped it off and didn't apply any). the stigma with that is the microscopic particles get in the paste and adversely effect temps... but it wouldn't be that bad.

so my advice would be to take off the cooler (again), clean off the stock crap and apply some AS5, making sure there is contact between the heatsink and the GPU.

what thermal grease will be good?

@shadow_ugz:
how hot does ur 9600gt run on load?
Arctic Silver 5 is what I used on my 8800GTX which seems to drop my temps pretty well. People usually recommend Arctic Silver Ceramique since it cannot conduct electricity since you also need to apply the paste on the memory, but personally I don't think it matters unless you apply too much.

I'm folding right now and my temps are 54C max, but keep in mind this card is barely a week old and has not been OCd other than the shaders which have been factory OCd.

Reseat the heatsink with good paste and blow any dust out and the card should be good as new or even better .

try taking your heatsink and turning it very very tiny back and forth 2-4 degrees back and forth to work out any bubbles very little but you should feel the paste sliding under it this should help for now untill you get some new paste

did you clean it out realy good? and how is your case airflow... i had an issue with a heat pocket under my gpu once i have a pci slot fan there now to blow out the hot air that gets traped under the massive cards they make now

EDIT when you do get the new paste don't over apply just a dab will do and ac5 takes up to 200 hours to mold to the heatsink all the way so you will notice a change over the first week you apply it on a gpu usualy 5-10c

thanks shadow...i too used to get 60C on load earlier wen i jus bought the card...

its freakin hot here so i guess the ambient temp might be messin it up a bit...nd my case is mostly open. so more dust...
but the fan on my model is so small...i don't think its enough...
i hope the AS5 will do the trick...
do u think i should get an external cooler?

naa if you keep your case open have something moving air in or around it like set it near a fan or a fan near it or a vent around your house... the temp in your house does effect your temps in your case but shouldn't be that much If you don't have any extra case fans around try and pick one up when you get your paste although buying paste and fans online SUX paying shiping usualy doubles the price of what u buy you dont need an external cooler just don't let your house get 100f ac5 is only going to lower your temps 5-10c unless you have some serious issue there (i guess it could be) good luck with it man keep us posted

Couldn't find many pics on this card but this is basically the V2 version which seems to lack the plastic cover on the heatsink.
