Default Reseating and replacing paste

Hey guys I want to see what kind of temps I get if I reseat my 8800gtx cooler with some shin-etsu g-751 and was wondering on how I should remove the stock thermal paste and how much of the shin I should apply, also I was wondering how should I handle the thermal pads?

For the thermal paste on there just use a paper towel and some rubbing alcohol. As for the shin probably about the same as you would for a cpu. For the thermal pad's just don't grab them to hard lol.

Howdy.

Rubbing alcohol and a lint-free cloth will remove the old TIM with relative ease. You could also use a xylene-based cleaner like Goof-off (NOT Goo-gone).

A pea-sized (or grain of rice) dollop of TIM will be sufficient, but use your best judgment so that the TIM does not squoosh out onto the PCB.

Sometimes the thermal pads can be used again, but I wouldn't necessarily do so unless you do not have replacement pads. Most PC enthusiast e-stores will carry some type of thermal pad.

Thanks for the info for the thermal paste but what I meant for the pads was, are they going to fall off when I pull off the cooler or something? ( I have never done this before so I have no idea whatsoever) Or will they just stay in place? And do I have to do anything to them.
Edit: Yea I have no replacement pads so I have to stick with the stock ones,

Sometimes they will come off, but much of the time they (the pads) will remain adhered to one of the two surfaces that the mate to.

If you have no replacement pads, then take care when removing the heatsink and the housing as you do not want to tear them.

If you feel that you may forget where they go, then have a camera handy and snap some pics to guide you when it is time for re-assembly.
