Ive got a new i7 rig and decided to try sli again. I have 2 gtx 280s in sli and all seems to be good, but the cards are getting pretty hot.
My question is it OK to use the 1st and 3rd pci express slots? The manual says that I should use 1 and 2 for dual sli, but the cards are directly against one another. Anyone know if it really makes any difference if I were to move the 2nd card to the 3rd sli slot instead? |

When you say manual. You mean motherboard manual? It's board specific.
You can try your second card in the third slot. Chances are it will drop it to pci e/ bandwidth to x8 or x1. Especially if it's an asus board. Asus has been like that for years. I have mine in the third slot. It's an evga board designed that way 3 x16 slots. The top card takes beating no matter what. It's normally 5 to 10c hotter under a load. Cryostasis it hits 85c fans@90%. That's with a stacker 832 aluminum case and 7-120mm fans@100%. It's HOT, too hot for me. In fact I was think about redoing tim and moving into the second slot. lol I'll do that next week.
