So I really dont care about overclocking my GTX 285, as it seems to kick butt on whatever settings I use and my little 1600x1200 monitor.
__________________But the noise is beginning to bug me. I looked at the arctic cooling GTX 280 product, but the VRM temps seem to be a concern. If I dont overclock, can I just install the 280 cooler without worrying about extra heatsings on the VRMs? Or is there another (air) solution to give me a quiet card?

Just turn down the fan speed with RivaTuner. Best of all, it's a free solution.

you should be fine if you dont overclock.
Also maby consider watercooling :P no fans except for the radiator, and even they can sometimes be silent :P

You do get used to it after a while man. I have my 260 on 55% fan 24/7 and its louder than my whole case (7fans inc HSK) and I got used to mine haha.
If not look at aftermarket passive coolers.
