Default 8800GTS 640mb, Tad bit too hot.

This is the card that I have.

What is the preferred temperature for these cards? I've been having issues with games locking up and going to a black screen and I believe it to be directly related to the temperature of my video card. Especially after I downloaded nVidia nTune software and found out that my card was idling at 60 degrees Celsius. I upped the fan speed to a whopping 195rpms and it trickled down to about 53 degrees Celsius at idle, but I still don't feel that is good enough. I'm looking at some coolers on newegg, I was curious if anyone has any suggestions on a cooler I should get for it.

Set the fan to 100% and then run Furmark for 5 minutes and tell us how hot it gets.

I'm running the stability test on the GPU. I'm remoting to my desktop at home, so it's updating slowly.

Edit: Stability test sucked, the temps didn't move. I'm going to get Furmark.

Mine sits in a closet also. It locked up when the doors were closed (duh!). Does much better when the doors are open. I'd rather run it with the doors closed though, which is why I considered a third-party cooler.

Edit: LOL, I re-read your post. My tower sits in a closet because on the other side of the wall is my TV that I use for a monitor.

It's upsetting when you look at the newer cards and you notice that you can't install them because they are so long you'd need a larger case.

Well if you really wanted to you could get the Thermal Right HR-03 plus, which probably runs around or under 50 USD, plus chuck in the cost of a fan another 10 or so and your gonna cost your self 60 to just drop temps.

Are you sure you don't have lots of dust?

I have the 320 mb version, and that puppy folds in a small case with bad airflow, i'm sure it reaches upper 80's especially with the current weather. Though I haven't had issues. If I remember correctly it is just a bad stock cooler.

Just buy a 9800 GTX+ or a 9800 GT after you sell your 8800. You'll end up spending a little more dough for something much faster.

You can remove the stock cooler and reapply your own brand of thermal paste/rampads that will help a lot. Also take some Compressed air to the fan and all the way through the heat sync.

If you don't care much about looks and neatness, you can always just do a little modification yourself using parts you have laying around.

You could try taking off the plastic casing over the card and then setting up a fan or two inside your case to blow air over the exposed heatsink. It would definitely cool it down but it probably wouldn't be much quieter and it won't look great.

That's up there, but it's not too hot. You only need to worry if it gets over 80C. When your playing games, just set the fan to 100%. It'll be loud, but you can always turn up the volume

I can't hear my tower because it's on the other side of the wall. I think I'll get a fan and have it blow inside the case to help cool it down.
