Default Nvidia gtx260 cooling .. Too hot ?

hi,

this is my first post.

i already put in the info for my system in the user cp.

i had some trouble playing resident evil 5 the last days.. it sometimes crashes.. and not in the best moment (last save 45 minutes ago)..

so, today was the day, i looked at my system and changed a fan, made new holes in the metal case and put it right under the nvidia fan.

now my GPU and ambient temp is 6,5 °C less than before (says RivaTuner).

I was still wondering about my ambient Temp..

here is all the temps i was testing. i didn't test my cpu, as it is very cool and the fan is a very good one (best in all the tests at that time) and never gets hot or even warm.

GPU - XFX GTX 260 BLACK EDITION @ 666 MHz GPU, 1404 MHz SHADER, 1152 MHz RAM

Core Temperature, max temps °C:

idle 48
full load (RE5 for over an hour) 74

Ambient Temperature °C:

idle 41
full load 62

Fan Speed:

idle 1365
full load 1440

Fan Speed is 40 % idle and 42,35 % in full load.

i read i can set the fan to higher values so the temps go down.

another thing i read is, that the gtx260 with normal values (no xfx xxx black edition 666) has the normal temps of idle 53 °C and load 76 °C, so i'm under these values even with a pre-overclocked GPU, Shader and RAM..

what is troubling me is the ambient temperature that riva tuner gives me.

i have my case open on one side, 3 CASE FANS, but the XFX GFX Card Case gets very hot.. got my fingers burnt when i touched it.

what do you think about this system ?

here's 2 pics of the system with the new fan position.

initially it was in the fan mounting to the left, i put it to the bottom right next to the nvidia fan.

Default Gxt260

Hi just wanted to tell u that u can use evga precision and set the fan speed to 100% im running 3 9800GTX+ cards and have them at 100% an speed and it makes a huge diff Also these gpus are made to run hot very hot. I hate that they run hot my 9800gx2 runs at 80c max and i think that is way too hot. so get the precision tool and let me know how it woks for you.

Also i just talked to nvidia and they say that the temp on a gtx260 can be 95c and still be ok. I would never run it that hot but get that software and set the fan speed up and it will run cool.

wouldn't i loose my lifetime guarantee for the xfx black edition when i use the evga precision tool ?..

i know these kind of tools.. if i ONLY want to change the fan speed it sets all values written in the app to the card and makes me loose my warranty.. doesn't it ?

i'm just afraid.. a lifetime warranty is something you wouldn't want to waste..

No your warranty will be just fine. You can go and OC the card if u want or even water cool they will stand by the card and warranty. i have had XFX PNY AND EVGA CARDS. all 3 are good on the warranty.

I use Rivatuner. Also XFX is one of the best companies when it comes to warrenties so you will be fine. I have yet to see anyone with a bone to pick when it comes to XFX.

thanks a lot for your help !

i just wrote a mail to xfx asking which tool to use for changing the fan speed without loosing my warranty.

when they answer, i'll test with 100% fan speed and post the values.

thanks again!

alrite, i believed in you all and xfx and started to change fan speed 100 % with rivatuner.

here's the data:

Core Temperature

idle
55 °C - fan auto (50 %) - case closed
55 °C - fan auto (40 %) - case open - fan in old position
48 °C - fan auto (40 %) - case open
44 °C - fan 100 % - case open

load
79 °C - fan auto (50 %) - case closed
74 °C - fan auto (40 %) - case open
59-62 °C - fan 100 % - case open

Ambient Temperature

idle
48 °C - fan auto (50 %) - case closed
47 °C - fan auto (40 %) - case open - fan in old position
41 °C - fan auto (40 %) - case open
37 °C - fan 100 % - case open

load
66 °C - fan auto (50 %) - case closed
62 °C - fan auto (40 %) - case open
49-51 °C - fan 100 % - case open

Fan Speed

idle
1378 - fan auto (50 %) - case closed
1380 - fan 40 % - case open - fan in old position
1365 - fan 40 % - case open
3145 - fan 100 % - case open

load
1760 - fan 51,4 % -case closed - auto
1440 - fan 42,35 % - case open - auto
3125 - fan 100 % - case open

but i really have to say... fan at 100% .. at first i looked around in my room and thought, ok, that must be my speakers playing a dolby surround sound (really), then i realized it's the fan at 100% .. it's like a small vacuum cleaner.

and after playing for 3 minutes my ears were starting to hurt from the noise..

so i'll rather keep to 40%
