So, I have installed the arctic accelero aftermarket cooler onto my 8800 GT few months ago. Today, I turned on my computer and I heard cracks and sizzling then the smell of burnt plastic. I thought it was the PSU but the computer still turns on just without picture on the monitor. So I took off the aftermaket cooler to find that the memory blew up. I was wondering if I could put back the stock cooler and RMA it? Anyone else tried this? Thanks!!!
P.S. I have saw people on this forum saying that you do not need to put heatsinks on the memory chips but from my experience, I would definatly suggest you find some heatsinks to put on!!!

Edits - Well you can try.

Sounds like your aftermarket heatsink didn't make good contact with your card. I wouldn't bother with an RMA since you are at fault...

If you put the origional cooler back on and the serial # sticker is still on the card you should be ok. (btw: if you had your vram clocked @ 1000 (2000) or more that may be your issue)

Try for it (call and explain what happened). Some companies will change it, and some wont (although I am not sure on BFG).

The warranty sticker is on the back of the PCB, I didn't have to remove any sticker in the process of installing the aftermaket cooler. I did see the heatsink fall off due to the small explosion and there shows a small burn mark. Also I did not do any overclocking.

Guess what???
BFG cleared my RMA and gave me a 9800 GT 512MB with ThermoIntelligence Passive Cooling Solution. ![]() It's a little slower than my old 8800 GT OC but it will do for now.

Yep, BFG is the best for warranty replacements. I had a bit of a problem with them regarding a PSU not too long ago, but they handled it very well and sent me an advance RMA without even taking my card #.
