try this tool, (also works on Nvidia cards) overclock the gpu a little and scan for artefacts, your system possibly locks up while testing when having too high of an OC........repeat the same steps for the memory.

Default Overclocking 8600GT

For your reference I am running my 8600GT @ 675MHz core, 1770MHz Shader clock & 740Mhz memory clock with standard cooling. I'm using RivaTuner and am new to OC'ing so haven't wanted to press too hard. GPU runs @ 69'C under load (playing crysis at the mo), and 44'C idle - seems pretty safe to me. I suspect to memory could be pushed harder though - Anybody managed to push their 8600GT harder than this let me know how please.

whats wrong with your 700 watt supply? thats plenty of power for your system.....

i run a cooler master 600 watt XtremePower duo, and it handles my system fine. my card is oc'd 690/2000 without a problem.

i dont understand guys figuring they need 1000 watts+ power for non sli setups. it doesnt make a difference.

the 700 watt OCZ you have is a decent power supply. dont think it will hold you back.

i'd look into a different cpu/mb instead ;-) maybe intel...:-)

Default problems with Crysis with 8600GT

I downloaded the demo for Crysis, thinking that with my set up it would work well, at least on Medium settings.
the only way i can play it without lagging is by setting EVERYTHING to low quality....
any ideas on whats wrong and what i should do?

thanks in advance,
james

You should be able to play Crysis on medium settings with that setup - would suggest you close all unneccesary progs running in the background, otherwise it's very simple to OC that 8600GT as mentioned above, download RivaTuner for free and ramp up the GPU speed - you may also find that nVidias nTune program (available for free from www.nvidia.com) can help get more from your system. Best of luck mate...
