Hi guys I have a 8600gt with stock settings at 540 core and 700 memory. I need a few things to cleared up before I start overclocking with ATItool.
__________________Ok when I click find max core all of the core sliders move up, should i instead move just the 3d performance core slider myself. Does it make a difference if I just overclock the 3d performance sliders or shall i let it overclock all of them. Now this is my main question, once i have clicked the find max core and its found the highest it can go, do i set it back to default and then click find max mem or leave it as it is and click find max mem. Once I have found both max core and max mem and speeds and then they are set back to default, should i drag the sliders right the way up to the stable speed it found or should I go in like 10 or 20mhz to get to that speed. I know these are probably noob questions but I am relatively new at overclocking myself, but I have done my research so if someone can help me answer these questions, will be appreciated. Thanks

Dude.. I wouldnt even look at the find max core and mem buttons. People have fried their cards using that crap. It doesnt find max of what your card can survive, rather it finds max of what your card can do.
Just link all the sliders together and move them up a bit, apply settings and scan for artifacts as you go higher and higher. Watch for temps, artifacts and stability.

Find Max has always underclocked my memory speed. I only use ATITool for artifact scanning. For changing clocks I use Coolbits. Rivatuner is good too.

I've read people say that about 'finding max', i'll take the advice,
__________________So i should move all the sliders up together?, but i read you only need to move the two under 3d performance. How long do you guys recommend me checking for artifacts before i move to the slider up again. I was thinking 10mins. And in the end for an hour, and then try out a game Thanks i think thats all that is left for me to know before i start.

I always change the clocks one at time. I find my max core speed, then max mem separately, then back them off by 10MHz or so and test them together.

find your core first, wait till the picture artifacts then back it down a few to be safe then do the same on mem then save your porfile.
Dont use the auto i know someone who had there card fried doing that, im just trying to save you a lot of hassle.

Ok guys i took the core to 630mhz and it was fine then I took the core to 640mhz and then i got artifacts, white dots all over the place. The memory clock was on 750mhz also at that time.
__________________So i'm thinking take the core to 600mhz to keep it safe and now look to see how far i can go with the memory clock. Or is 630mhz and 750mhz as far as it will go. I've been looking around and most people have been able getting 700 core and 850 memory speed. oh and by the way temps were at 65 degrees

I'd drop the core to default speed, then start upping the memory some more.
I usually raise speeds by 10% over stock at first, then 5MHz every 30 minutes of artifact free running. Then once I get artifacts I drop back and test for a couple of hours or better. By the way, welcome to OCN. You're bound to learn a lot here, and hopefully help others out too. Be sure to fill out your system specs in your User CP.

overclocking is luck also, sometimes you get a lucky card that will overclock loads, sometime you dont
, just like CPU's with there steppings.

My card came with its own software for overclocking, I am not using this to overclock but it probably gives a rough idea of how far my particular card will go, but it does not mean that will be successful.
__________________Default settings Max slider will go This is what I have overclocked to now with atitools. As you see red zone looks like would be taking the card to the limit. I have been looking around to see how far pre-overclocked 8600gt's are at. The evga superclocked is the most expensive 8600gt i could find had a core of 576mhz and memory clock at 750mhz/1500mhz. Whilst the most pre-overclocked is the xfx 8600gt xxx editon having a core 620mhz and memory 800mhz/1600mhz. Also i think probably one of the reasons I can't overclock this card as much than others is because the fan on this card is quite small than the other cards I have seen. Even though other people have clocked theirs much higher than what i have, my 8600gt still looks a decent overclock at core 620mhz and memory at 800mhz same as the xfx xxx edition. Oh btw does the ati artifact tool work because when i got artifacts the first time there was no beep and the artifact window was still reading no errors. So to round things off I have my 8600gt core at 620mhz and memory at 800mhz, still scanning for artifacts, no problems as of yet. I haven't tried going any higher. When scanning for artifacts temps jump quickly to 65degrees. Thanks to you guys for giving sound advice and welcoming me.
