Maybe it's time for a *cringe* hard drive reformat. That can fix the strangest problems for no apparent reason at all.

You may have to install the drivers manually instead of a setup file. I ran into an error with my 8600 gt not long ago. Turns out the setup was recognizing my Xp Pro as win2000, install those drivers, and giving me the same 640x480x4 results you are having. Once i manually installed the drivers and chose the correct XP drivers, the problems went away.

well you go to your device manager, right click on the display adapter, properties, update driver etc etc, choose no... , then chose install manually i choose from a list, work your way to display adapters, let yourself browse to the D:drivers\win2k-xp folder you stated, then find the inf file called nv4_disp.inf
just write me again tomorrow or lets say 1pm EST if you haven't fixed it, ill put together a picture tutorial for you if it becomes necessary, i know i wasnt the most descriptive, but im going to bed lol

Yeah, install SP 3, then try to install your drivers.

I installed SP2 and then did the manual install of the 8600 GT drivers, on restart nothing came on screen. I removed the card and restarted and computer booted up fine.
